ESCALATING REPRESSION: THE TARGETING OF PRO-DEMOCRACY LEADERS IN ESWATINI
By January 2023, Eswatini’s pro-democracy movement had become the monarchy’s primary target, as the regime ramped up its efforts to silence those leading the call for reform. The systematic targeting of political leaders, activists, and community organizers reflected the monarchy’s fear of losing control amidst growing demands for justice and accountability. This escalation of repression has not only heightened risks for those advocating for change but also underscored the regime’s reliance on fear to maintain its grip on power.
Leaders within the pro-democracy movement have borne the brunt of the government’s crackdown. Arbitrary arrests, prolonged detentions, and spurious charges have become routine tactics to remove influential figures from the public sphere. Members of Parliament Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube remained in detention, facing charges under the Sedition and Subversive Activities Act (SSA) and the Suppression of Terrorism Act (STA). Their continued imprisonment is a stark reminder of the regime’s willingness to weaponize the legal system to silence opposition voices.
Community organizers and grassroots leaders have also faced severe reprisals. In rural areas, where traditional leaders aligned with the monarchy exert significant influence, individuals advocating for land rights and fair governance have been subjected to intimidation and violence. Activists delivering petitions or organizing protests are often detained without charge, their work labeled as subversive to justify the government’s heavy-handed response.
Women leaders in the movement face unique challenges. Gender-based violence and harassment are frequently used as tools to deter their activism. Despite these obstacles, women have remained at the forefront of the struggle, advocating not only for political reform but also for gender equality and social justice. Their resilience in the face of such targeted repression highlights their critical role in the broader fight for democracy.
Youth leaders, too, have been disproportionately targeted. As the driving force behind many protests and online campaigns, young people have drawn the ire of the monarchy. Social media platforms, a vital tool for organizing and raising awareness, are closely monitored by the state. Youth leaders are often arrested on charges of incitement or terrorism, facing prolonged detentions that disrupt their lives and advocacy efforts.
The escalation of repression has not been limited to individuals within Eswatini’s borders. Activists in exile have also reported increased harassment, with the government employing transnational tactics to monitor and intimidate dissenters abroad. Families of exiled leaders often face retaliation, including arrests and threats, as the regime seeks to extend its control beyond its geographic boundaries.
This pattern of targeting pro-democracy leaders is not only a violation of their individual rights but also an attack on the movement as a whole. By silencing its leaders, the monarchy aims to weaken the organizational capacity of the movement and sow fear among its supporters. However, this strategy has not succeeded in quelling the demand for reform. Instead, it has galvanized many within Eswatini to continue the fight, recognizing that the regime’s actions reveal its growing insecurity.
International attention to the plight of pro-democracy leaders in Eswatini is crucial. Advocacy organizations have called for the release of political prisoners and for an end to the persecution of activists, but more must be done to hold the monarchy accountable. Governments and regional bodies should impose targeted sanctions against those responsible for human rights abuses and provide support to individuals and organizations working to promote democracy.
The targeting of pro-democracy leaders is a testament to the monarchy’s desperation, but it is also a reminder of the strength of Eswatini’s movement for change. The courage and resilience of these leaders, despite the immense risks they face, are a source of inspiration for all who seek a just and democratic Eswatini. Their sacrifices will not be in vain, as their work lays the foundation for a future where every Swazi can live free from fear and oppression. The struggle continues, and the voices of these leaders will not be silenced. Together, the people of Eswatini will overcome the darkness of repression and build a brighter, freer future.
